Board of Trustees Highlights
An Update from the Eanes ISD Board of Trustees
Superintendent's Report
Dr. Leonard

With the start of the school year in full swing, we have also begun a new year of Board meetings. We have a lot to discuss as relates to budget, salaries and benefits, and the proposed Tax Ratification Election (TRE). I invite you to participate as you are able. Below is a synopsis of the meetings with links to more details online.
The September meetings included reports on Accountability Ratings, the new Eanes Education Foundation Westlake Alumni Association and area salary and benefits comparisons. The Board also heard a report from the Facilities & Enrollment Committee and the latest enrollment numbers. More information below.

Salaries & Benefits Discussion

At the September meeting, the Board heard an update on the comparison of area school districts' salaries and benefits. Out of the 12 area districts, the percentage of increases ranges from 1.5% to 4%. At this time, the Board has not made a decision on salaries and benefits for 2017-18 but has instead decided to wait until later in the fall following the November 7 TRE to make its decision. If the Board does not vote for an increase, Eanes ISD will rank in the mid to bottom quartiles of salary schedules. If voters approve the tax rate proposed in the TRE (by voting "FOR" the proposition), the District would be able to access additional funds to be used for educational programs, including salary increases.

Accountability Ratings Released

The District and all nine campuses earned high marks on the Texas Education Agency's Accountability Ratings, which were presented to the Board in September. Eanes ISD was one of 58 school districts to earn the Post-Secondary Readiness distinction, while Westlake High School was one of 5.3% of high schools that earned all seven distinctions.

Enrollment & Transfers Update

The Board was presented an update on enrollment and transfer students in September. The total enrollment based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA) is 8,042 students. The net difference so far of 74 students between actuals-to-date and the official 2016-17 enrollment derives from the elementary grades, where there are currently 85 fewer Pre-K through 5th grade students compared to last year. Districtwide, the population of out-of-district transfer students is down 8-percent from 424 in 2016-17 to 390 so far in 2017-18. At Westlake High School, there are 11-percent fewer out-of-district transfer students (219 versus 194) from last year to this year.

Facilities & Enrollment Committee Report

Following the District's Annual Strategic Summit in January 2017, the Board of Trustees established several initiatives. Of these, a continued focus on facilities and enrollment was expressed. In order to structure a focused effort, a committee was established. The purpose of this committee was to evaluate the current state (Enrollment/Facilities/Budget) comparing it to the projected future state of the District in these areas. At the September 19 meeting, the Board was presented an update on the progress of the committee. The committee will continue its discussions on strategies for campus capacities, portables, Child Development Center (CDC) factors, campus attendance zone factors, etc.

Westlake Alumni Association Announced

In response to the Eanes ISD Board of Trustees and the EISD District Improvement Plan, the Eanes Education Foundation (EEF) presented information on the newly-launched alumni relations program.
